Greenwood Welcomes Back Lander Students
August 21, 2006
GREENWOOD, SC – A revived sense of community partnership is building in Greenwood, South Carolina. The feeling is evident in the announcement of a free outdoor concert in Uptown Greenwood this Saturday, August 26 to welcome back Lander University students to Greenwood.
Lander, with a campus located less than a mile from Uptown Greenwood, has a student enrollment of approximately 3,000 with a student body representing 23 states and 16 foreign countries.
Lander University, the City of Greenwood, Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation, and Homemade Genius are partnering to bring regional musicians and artisans into Greenwood to showcase their talents for the one-day event.
“This will be a great way for Lander students to get to know people in Greenwood,” said Charlotte Cabri, Lander’s director of University Relations. “Since 1904 when Lander relocated from Williamston to Greenwood, the people of this area have embraced our students and made them feel part of the community. That relationship just keeps getting better.”
The afternoon will include performances by homegrown Greenwood musicians the Standup Beans and Sunny Blunder. Columbia, South Carolina band The Ectomorphs will also grace the Greenwood stage. Finally, the afternoon will feature four bands from the Athens, Georgia music scene including Telenvela, Mouser, Colonel Knowledge and the Lickity Splits, and Quiet Hooves.
Music begins in the Uptown Greenwood Fountain Parking Lot at 4 PM and will conclude at 11 PM.
“Lander University significantly impacts the local and regional economy through its expenditures and those of its students and visitors,” said Uptown Greenwood Manager Angie Jones. “We are very excited to be able to embrace and support Lander’s continued success.”
Homemade Genius, the event producer, is a not-for-profit organization located in Greenwood whose mission is to encourage the artistic skills and musical abilities of individuals. Homemade Genius has produced and sponsored numerous musical and artistic events in Uptown Greenwood over the past year.
“Our last outdoor Homemade Genius event brought nearly 1,000 people into Uptown,” said Homemade Genius creator Ian Morris. “This event was held in the summer while Lander was not in session, therefore Saturday’s concert should draw a larger crowd.”
The Saturday event will also feature the display of homegrown artwork at Jimary Java located at 330 Main Street in Uptown.
Sponsors for the Welcome Back Lander Concert also include Simple PC, SCTEL, Inn on the Square, Tinsley and Adams LLP, McAllister’s Deli, American Speedy Printing, T W Boon’s, Custom Audio and Lighting, and Jimary Java.
