Maxwell Work Move Up The Street

Greenwood, SC - Traffic will reopen Uptown along the lower section of Maxwell Avenue today from Edgefield Street to Monument Street, and construction will shift to the upper section of Maxwell from Monument to Main.
The work is part of Greenwood’s streetscape project.

A portion of Maxwell Avenue has been closed to traffic since May 4 for extensive road construction. During the last three weeks, the old asphalt base, brick and subsoil have been removed. The contractor has placed a new stone and asphalt base.
Starting today, the roadwork will shift to the upper section of Maxwell Avenue. A road block will begin in front of Jon Holloway Studio (140 Maxwell Ave.) to the Greenwood Building (104 Maxwell Ave.).

Traffic coming eastward on Maxwell from the direction of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home will be detoured onto Monument Street.
Local traffic only coming westward from Main Street will be able to access the public parking area in front of McCaslan’s, Gentleman’s Choice, Two Old Bags and the Floral Case.
The work on the upper block of Maxwell Avenue, similar to the work that has recently taken place on the lower block, is anticipated to take a minimum of two weeks. The construction schedule is dependent on the weather.
Once construction is completed on both sections, the contractor will place the find layer of asphalt on the entire project.
“The patience of the merchants and traveling public in this area has been incredible,” said Assistant City Manager Charlie Barrineau. “Now that the project is starting to take shape, everyone can now see that Maxwell Avenue will truly be a future destination point for Greenwood.”
Greenwood City Council approved the expenditure of nearly $1 million for a streetscape project on Maxwell Avenue, a project which will be highly similar to the one that transformed Oregon.
According to Barrineau, just more than $320,000 for the project will come from a SC Department of Commerce Rural Opportunity Investment grant, with the balance being paid for through hospitality taxes.
