Greenwood, SC - Let the traffic flow.
Maxwell Avenue was officially reopened for traffic Wednesday morning following the completion of extensive road construction in connection with the city’s streetscape improvement project on the heavily traveled thoroughfare.
Greenwood City Council approved the expenditure of nearly $1 million for the streetscape project on Maxwell Avenue, a project that is highly similar to the one that transformed the adjoining Oregon Avenue.
According to assistant city manager Charlie Barrineau, just more than $320,000 for the project came from a S.C. Department of Commerce Rural Opportunity Investment grant, with the balance being paid through hospitality taxes. |

Barrineau said Wednesday there is still clean-up work to be done on Maxwell and that more resurfacing will be done on Edgefield Street to Maxwell and on Maxwell to Kitson Street to clean up after underground utility improvements.
The assistant city manager added that decorative concrete crosswalks are set to be put in at Maxwell and Main Street, Maxwell and Edgefield Street and Maxwell and Monument Avenue, though that work will not begin until after the Festival of Discovery.
Some residents have wondered whether CSX would be making improvements to the railroad crossing on Maxwell Avenue. Barrineau said the city has requested CSX make improvements to the crossing as soon as possible.
Residents can inquire about improvements to the crossing by calling 1-877-835-5279 or by e-mailing tellcsx@csx.com.
