Greenwood, SC - There's something new to this year's Greenwood Music Festival which starts Friday with the showing of the 1936 movie classic "Show Boat."

Greenwood Music Festival founder and director Keith Jameson has partnered with Greenwood Community Theatre's First Friday Film Series for the showing of "Show Boat," starring Irene Dunne, Allan Jones and Charles Winninger, to make the movie the opening event for the third annual festival.

The movie starts at 8 p.m.  Prior to the show, Jameson and Stacey Robinson, both Greenwood natives, will be at the Arts Center at the Federal Building at 7 p.m. for a wine and cheese reception.

Tickets for the reception and movie are $10.  Tickets for the movie are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children.

Robinson is one of the performers for the music festival.  He sings at 8 p.m. Jan. 9 at First Baptist Church on Grace Street in Greenwood. Robinson is a bass-baritone who has starred on Broadway and is an international opera star.

He's performed on Broadway in "Show Boat," "Big River" and "The Phantom of the Opera," and with Houston Grand Opera in "Porgy and Bess."

His concert will offer Broadway selections, popular songs and spirituals.

The 1936 version of "Show Boat" is considered the classic telling of the story based on the novel by Edna Ferber.  The film features the songs of Jerome Kern, including "Can't Help Lovin," "Dat Man of Mine," "Make Believe" and Paul Robinson's "Ol' Man River."

"Show Boat" tells the story of Magnolia Hawks and her father Captain Andy.  They live on the floating show boat, the Cotton Blossom.  She meets river town gambler and falls for him.  When the stars of the show boats company are forced to leave, the gambler and Hawks are the replacements.  They fall in love and marry and move to Chicago with their daughters.  Hanging their fortunes on the gambler's luck, he finally leaves Hawks, who returns to the show boat and becomes a star.
