Renovation of Uptown Courtyard Under Way

Greenwood, SC - Construction on an extensive remodeling of the courtyard between the Federal Building and Greenwood Community Theatre is well under way.
Greenwood assistant manager Charlie Barrineau said the city is aiming for an Oct. 1 completion of the $63,700 project.
A pair of grants are helping to fund the courtyard renovations. An Arts Facility Projects Grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission provided $16,777 for the project, while $20,000 came from a South Carolina Heritage Corridor grant.
The remainder of the project will be funded through City of Greenwood hospitality taxes. |

An additional $6,200 was expended on the project design, which was done by Yancey Robertson in 2008. AOS Specialty Contractors, of Columbia, is handling the construction on the courtyard renovation.
Arts Council of Greenwood County executive director Anne Craig said the courtyard project has been a topic of discussion for more than a year.
The goal of revamping the courtyard, which is to be called the Massimilla Courtyard, is to develop it into a more usable space for gatherings and other events appropriate for the Emerald Triangle.
Three large trees have been removed from the courtyard, and raised brick planters will be constructed for seating.
There will be a small grass lawn, as well as a small stage for performances.
The courtyard will have coordinated underground lighting, electricity hook-ups and improved drainage.
