Uptown Launches Construction Media Campaign
March 24, 2008
Greenwood, SC - The Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation (UGDC) and the City of Greenwood recognize that the orange barrels and large pieces of construction equipment that will be seen throughout Uptown in 2008 might not seem very appealing, but it’s all part of a plan to improve Uptown Greenwood.
- Uptown Greenwood is launching an awareness campaign to better inform the public and Uptown merchants of the construction schedule.
-
- “All of the construction is a concerted effort to implement the City Center Master Plan,” said UGDC Manager Angie Jones. “We are pleased to see a host of projects on going from public street improvements to private commercial investment.”
-
- The campaign includes the development of a weblink, www.uptowngreenwood.com/construction.aspx, where daily and weekly construction updates and photographs will be posted.

Uptown Greenwood is encouraging businesses, churches, and other civic groups to place the construction web banner icon on their website and provide a link to the construction information page. The web banner can be downloaded from the Uptown construction website page.
Projects that are already underway or slated to begin in Uptown in 2008 include crosswalk construction along Main Street, building façade and road improvements along Maxwell Avenue, and the construction of the new Greenwood County Library on South Main.
In addition, the resurfacing of Main Street from Seaboard Avenue to Court Avenue was recently completed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation the week of March 17 - 21.
Construction is scheduled to begin on the Main Street pedestrian crosswalks the week of April 28. Construction for this particular project should last 60 days.
The City's goal is to keep Greenwood traffic in the area flowing throughout the crosswalk project. To do that, crews intend to work on one lane of Main Street at a time, leaving a minimum of one south and north bound lane open at all times.
Construction on the new Greenwood County Library is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2008.
“As a merchant in Uptown, there is no perfect time for construction,” said Sammy Nasrollahi, UGDC Board Chair and owner of Rugs of Distinction on Main Street. “However, I believe these improvements lay the groundwork for great things to come for Uptown.”
Jones concluded, “We want to work hard to let people know that Uptown is open and accessible. Uptown is and will always be open for business.”

MAXWELL AVENUE FACADE/STREETSCAPE
Facade improvements began on 20 buildings on or adjacent to Maxwell Avenue in December 2007. In addition, plans are being prepared to develop Maxwell to look similar to that of recently revamped Oregon Avenue. Streetscape construction will begin in the summer of 2008.
