Greenwood, SC - The next round of revitalization efforts in Uptown Greenwood officially began Monday morning.

Following extensive facade and streetscape improvements along Maxwell Avenue, the City of Greenwood is now embarking on an improvement project on Long Alley, which is adjacent to Maxwell.

The city received a $300,000 grant for the work from the South Carolina Department of Commerce. Each of the 10 properties along Long Alley has been assigned $20,000 of the grant funds for facade improvements.

Each participating property owner is required to provide a 10 percent cash match and pay for any improvements made past $22,000.

There are two aspects to the improvement project: facade upgrades on Long Alley and upgrades to the city’s parking lot on Maxwell. Furman Architects is designing the facade improvements, while Davis and Floyd will design the parking lot upgrades.

On Monday, workers from Summit Construction started removing exterior metal from four buildings along Long Alley. The fronts of those buildings are at 302, 312, 314 and 318 Main St.

The metal removal is slated to take about two weeks. Once the metal is removed, Furman Architects will inspect the buildings underneath and make facade improvement recommendations to the property owners.

The second phase of the project will go out for bid in the coming months, with a summer completion expected.

“We are excited to see this project get under way,” Greenwood assistant to the city manager Julie Wilkie said. “I can’t wait to see what is behind all that metal. The (facade upgrades) and the parking lot improvements are going to complement what has already been done on Maxwell.”
